5 Tips for Traveling with a Baby, Traveling with a new born, 8-months-old

You get on a plane and as the plane takes off you enter into a dreamy world. White clouds and unimaginable scenes. For a moment I believe that I am born to see the first ray of sun that is about to hit and pamper my bare skin.

Unfortunately, not all dreams come true…all the time..

Recently I travelled with my 8 months old kid. The whole journey I was bothered about him. As the first few hours went in entertaining him, the next few went thinking about the ear-popping that he can experience during the flight.

However, nothing really happened and it was a lesson learned. “A journey with tension and fear is not a journey at all. “

So discussing 5 Tips for Traveling with a Baby

1) Health: Thankfully my baby boy was not under the weather but at few times his nose use to get block. This worried me a lot as block nose means pain in ear due to ear-popping while we fly.

If baby has a cough, cold or ear infection, he/she is more likely to get unpleasant experience because of ear-popping which happens due to change in air pressure.

Breastfeeding/bottle feeding the baby during take-off and landing is important and relaxing.

So, it is important that your baby’s nose should be clear! Also, carry his nasal spray in your handbag so that you can reach to it easily and when needed during the flight. Moreover, prepare a first aid kit which has all the medicines.

2) Baby’s ID proof & Prescription: Do not forget to keep doctor’s prescription and baby’s birth certificate. In addition to this, if the child is more than 2 years then an ID proof is needed. These should be in your handbag with you.

3) The right travel gear: Carrying right stuff is of utmost importance especially, if you are travelling alone. As with my baby I had 3 bags, I wanted both my hands to be free, so I purchased this Luvlap Elite Baby Carrier (Black) from Amazon and I can’t thank myself enough! Young babies generally make good travellers if they feel cuddled and secure. It was relaxing for both of us.

If your baby is older you can even carry him/her in a stroller. Be sure that your baby is use to the new gear. If you just purchased a baby gear for travel purpose, then, take your baby out in the new gear and try and make him/her comfortable.

By the way, you may need to get a luggage tag for it, at the check-in desk for strollers. Just ask at the airport when you check-in.

4) Always call the airlines (7 kgs handbag is allowed for baby): I was flying by Indigo Airlines (Domestic flight) and had 3 bags. I called them and asked about all the doubts I had in my mind, that is, about travelling with a baby. You should do it too.

You can call to ask about your luggage, porter service etc.

I came to know that I am allowed 7 kgs hand bag and 15 kgs check in. My baby is allowed 7kgs handbag.

However, you can request to move hand bag as under check in bags. This means that all the babies clothes and other stuff (the heavy bag) will go at the back of the airplane.

While you need to keep a separate small handbag with you. Here is the stuff that I carried with me on plane while rest went as check-in luggage:

  •   Diapers
  •   wipes
  •   nappy rash cream
  •   changing mat
  •   tissues
  •   bibs
  •   first-aid kit( medicines and nasal spray)
  •   1 pair of clothes and a light jacket with hoodie
  •   1-2 toys like teething rings and plastic keys
  •   bottle & formula milk (if child is not breastfeeding) in my case I didn’t carry it as I still breastfeed my baby.

5) Take rest before flying & calm your senses: To be comfortable and energetic mom needs to take full rest. It is you who will have to carry the baby and so it is necessary that moms eat nicely before flying. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking good amount of water. Carry few small juice tetra packs if you can.

Now when everything is done, please calm down it is just a flight and not a world war 3. Once when you board the plane, feed your baby through the take off and landing to ease any earache.

During the flight make your baby look outside the window. Yes, they don’t understand anything but it is surely something new for them and they might like it. Mine started playing with the window shutter.

Do not get embarrass if your baby cries. Try and walk him/her about the plane.

About Porter Service: very crucial to know.

Now you do not need to worry about your luggage.

You may have seen few men in some uniform with trolleys to pick your luggage. Airports are now offering porter services. It is a very good alternative to trolley touts pretending as passenger assistance staff. Sometimes they just come to you and start picking your bags.

However now such is not the case. There are paid porter services that you can find at the airport. You can find more information  here for Bengaluru Porter Service.
