What Makes a Brand Unique
They say that you can tell a lot about a man by the history he has built with his own hands. Most of us, no matter our origin, make a mark in time; however, how big a mark that is and how much its voice echoes through the channels of creation depends entirely on how we pursue being exceptional in all things that we do. Ordinary is not acceptable and being just “good” is not good enough; That this why the history of Rado can truly be defined as being one that echoes through time since until now the impact of this company’s innovations continue to be felt in the watch making industry.
The Start of the Brand
While Rado is known the world over for its pioneering efforts in watch design through the use of specially created materials, it actually had rather humble beginnings in the form of efforts of three brothers Fritz, Ernst and Werner Schlup. They started their company, Schlup & Co. n 1917 as a means of developing their own watches in what was an overly saturated market in Switzerland at the time. However, over time, the company slowly developed its reputation in the industry as they focused on creating watches that were of comparable quality to their rivals. By 1957 the company was taken over Paul Lyuthe who proceeded to reorganise the enterprise under a different brand which he named “Rado”.
Expansion and Development
Based on the history of the brand stated on Luxpresso.com, under Lyuthe, Rado focused on rapid expansion of not only its product lineup but also of the markets it sold its products to. This manifested in the company penetrating numerous new markets in the U.S., South America and even as far as several markets in Asia. The main selling point of the brand during this period focused on its Norse and Gazelle lines which had, at the time, the unique characteristic of being water resistant for up to 120 meters underwater. This unique selling point was only possible due to the advanced engineering department of the company which focused on utilize tool grade materials in order to create as strong a case as possible to prevent water from getting inside the watch’s mechanism.
Hallmark of Product Development
Zimson Watches, seller of luxury brand Rado, Rolex and many more, stated that by the early 1960s, it began the sale of the one product type that would propel the brand into what can only be defined as international stardom. Rado released the DiaStar, whose claim to fame was the fact that its watch face, made of transparent artificial sapphire, was scratch resistant making it the world’s first scratch resistant watch. While released with little initial fanfare, the brand slowly gained international prominence to the extent that the company was able to sell 1.5 million DiaStar watches in 1987. The amount of watches sold started increasing over the next few years due to surprisingly high demand within the U.S. market.
What Makes a Rado Watch Unique?
The hallmark of any Rado watch is the scratch proof watch face; however, the quality of the company’s watches isn’t limited to just that. If it were, then it is unlikely that the brand would not have reached such a level of prominence among both ordinary buyers and serious watch connoisseurs. The “soul” of any Rado watch is in the quality and durability of the design. Rado watches were made to last and not break down or get damaged as easily as their other contemporaries in the watch making industry. For instance, during its initial forray into developing its first scratch proof watch, the company also created a similarly durable casing in the form of solidified tungsten carbide powder that was used primarily for tool making. Rado took the use of durable materials even further by creating fully ceramic watches by the late 1980s, a design feature unique to Rado at the time. In fact, by the mid 1990s, Rado’s focus on durability bore fruit in the form of its Ceramos watches which were created as a direct result of fusing ceramic materials with metal. The end result was a watch that was more durable than any of its previous incarnations yet was far lighter. This approach to durability is so internationally renowned that Abtwatches.com states that it is quite likely that the Rado watch you buy today will be the same watch you use 10 years from now.
Pioneering efforts in unmatched durability and superb quality, a Rado watch is definitely an item for professionals looking for a watch that can stand the day to day abuse of a fast paced environment and keep on ticking.
